Congratulations to the following Fellows who have been recognised in the New Year Honours list. Professor Wendy Hall CBE, Professor of Computer Science, and formerly Senior Vice President of the Academy, has been appointed DBE for services to Science and Technology. Terence Morgan, Chief Executive, Tube Lines and Professor Peter Wells, have been awarded CBEs. Mike Glover and Professor Richard Williams have both been awarded an OBE. And Barry Haseltine and Terence Lazenby have been honoured with the MBE ...

Nuclear engineering skills

Skills for the nuclear industries and defence were under the spotlight at an Academy workshop on 5 December, which brought together 70 stakeholders from civil and defence nuclear engineering, along with representatives of the engineering educational providers and others interested in the provision of engineering skills across the nuclear industries. The aim of the day was to foster communication on this issue between the various stakeholders, get a clear picture of the issues in each sector and understand national and local work that is currently being undertaken to address them...

Academy hosts international workshop on Philosophy and Engineering

How can we define 'engineering' across cultures? Is 'systems thinking' the engineering equivalent of philosophy? Can engineers build devices that will help solve philosophical problems? These were some of the issues explored at the second international Workshop on Philosophy of Engineering (WPE), held at The Royal Academy of Engineering from 10 to 12 November. This was the second WPE to be held, following a successful meeting at the Technical University of Delft last year...

'Engineering better health' conference exhibits innovation in healthcare

The Royal Academy of Engineering held a conference on 19 November that explored the impact biomedical engineering has had on society. To celebrate its 20-year anniversary the UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering group organised a conference and a lecture which examined the future of engineering in healthcare. The conference featured speakers covering topics such as imaging, surgery, therapy, patient monitoring and emerging technologies....

Patient privacy - Academy helps to prepare thought-provoking drama

The Academy in partnership with the Y Touring Theatre Company, has launched its new £0.25 million Theatre of Debate® project on the use of electronic patient records, by hosting its first workshop in London today. The project is supported by the Wellcome Trust and Central YMCA. The project will aim to raise young people's and adults' awareness of the use of electronic patient records for health and medical research by delivery of a thought-provoking play to be delivered as a live production to schools and hospitals across the UK...
